Vorwort zu "The Last Witchfinder" - rescheduled to Nov 142012-11-14 19:00:004G+

While I'm excited for this movie to come out (loved the first one) I don't understand why they have to show so much in trailers these days. It's as if they want to show you the whole movie, so not sure if I should recommend you to watch this trailer... (also probably  #nsfw )

Sneak peek - Materialization and Polymerization

+Comment Tracker desperately needed a design and code refresh for quite a while now. With the new material design and accompanying Polymer paper elements coming out at #io14 (and the web-starter-kit that was published just before I/O), I felt inspired enough to get started on bringing Comment Tracker to more screens inside and outside of hangouts.

There's still some work to be done, but I'll be looking for testers in the coming weeks. So if you are interested in trying out the new version of Comment Tracker let me know in the comments, and I will add you to the circle I will share the links to the standalone and hangout-extension with, once it's stable and feature-complete enough for testing.

Some interesting custom elements that I needed to create in the process of implementing this so far (all of which... more »

GitHub shares

One of my pet peeves is the prominance of the profile image in the preview snippet when sharing my GitHub repos to Google+. While I don't mind seeing my face others might not feel the same, but removing the image and just leaving the link doesn't feel very satisfactory either.

When looking at the GitHub repo page in the Structure Data Testing Tool (http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets) I noticed that they already prepare some schema.org markup, but not the fields that Google+ uses to render the snippet (https://developers.google.com/+/web/snippet/).

Adding the necessary markup and a screenshot/preview image to the README.md solves this problem nicely (since luckily some HTML can be mixed into markdown) and also allows for defining the title independently of the repo name which is used by default.

Adding the necessary markup and a screenshot/preview image to the README.md solves this problem nicely (since luckily some HTML can be mixed into markdown) and also allows for defining the title independently of the repo name which is used by default.

Source of the readme:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Scarygami/dart_people_mosaic/master/README.md

Related, which is what I actually wanted to share in the first place before being distracted by fixing the share snippet, I've added some fixes to the Dart+ People mosaic: https://github.com/Scarygami/dart_people_mosaic

Note: because Google+ caches snippet information for an indeterminate amount of time which seems to be independent of cache-control headers, sharing the https://github.com/Scarygami/dart_people_mosaic URL will most likely still render the default snippet. You can fool the snippet fetcher by appending random query parameters to the URL which is especially useful for testing: https://github.com/Scarygami/dart_people_mosaic?foo=bar

"Prepare to be Scared!" might be true looking at their website design... hope they know a little bit more about making movies.

The Necroscope movie has had rumours for lots of years now, with rights moving from one film studio to the next. I very much doubt that this is actually meant for a movie. The brain can produce much better images for this kind of material...

That being said, read the books! Still one of the best depiction of Vampires or rather Wamphyri in my opinion. (Note: they don't sparkle, sorry!)

Also funny that they would mention that "The REST APIs are not part of the Google Fit Developer Preview." since pretty obviously they are using the REST APIs via their Android APIs already ;)

Now playing: Mind - Path to Thalamus

I actually was preparing to post about another game (coming later) when this thing came along and caught my interest.

Gameplay-wise it's mostly puzzle solving, but not your usual kind of puzzles. Basically you control the weather to change the environment to find a path to continue. Practically this is a lot more difficult and engaging than it might sound.

The game also features gorgeous graphics which make you take your time strolling around while trying to solve the puzzles.

After doing some tests (https://github.com/Scarygami/google-plugins) I've come to the conclusion that most of the current gapi plugins don't work well when trying to render them inside of custom (Polymer) elements, so this project is on hold for now.

You can get some to display correctly with some trickery by first rendering them in light dom and moving them into the element, but you get a lot of ugly errors in the console and most interaction is broken.
E.g. the person/page widgets will render correctly, but the "Follow" button on those widgets tries to create a new overlay/div/iframe in light dom which can't communicate with the main widget correctly and fails to work.

With the rise and Google's push of web components it would be nice to have those plugins work nicely with custom elements, or (even better) have equivalent web components to be used.... more »

So I just finished Pineview Drive and I'm not quite sure what to think of it.

It had a great atmosphere and the story might have turned out to be interesting. But gameplay was kinda repetitive. Each day basically looked like this:

1. Get up.
2. Walk around the house to find keys to open doors to find more keys.
3. Wait for a jump-scare to happen at some point which makes a new key appear. (If you can't find it yourself just wait around a bit and you'll get a slight hint like "Hmmm, I might have to check the kitchen again.")
4. Walk around the house looking for the door where the new key fits.
5. Find a note revealing a bit of the story.
6. Go to sleep.

That is until Day 30 where you suddenly find yourself in a completely different area with an increased rate of jump scares, which made me die of fear in this level once,... more »

That is until Day 30 where you suddenly find yourself in a completely different area with an increased rate of jump scares, which made me die of fear in this level once, while I was doing fine until day 29. Dying of fear interestingly is the only way you can die in the game, but trying to make the game more difficult by introducing more jump scares somehow feels wrong...

And the ending was... well I have no idea what the ending was to be honest or what the story was they wanted to tell...___

As you might have noticed I invested quite some time in Polymer recently. What I like about web components is that they make a lot of things a lot easier, except...

Normally adding a +1 button (or any other Google+ plugin) to a website is just about the easiest thing you can do.

1. Take the code snippet from the docs, e.g. https://developers.google.com/+/web/+1button/
2. Paste it in your code at the appropriate place.
3. Done.

Unfortunately the gapi JS library doesn't like to work with the Shadow DOM. Even if you pass in a direct reference to an element inside of your element it won't work.

The <google-hangout-button> (https://github.com/GoogleWebComponents/google-hangout-button/) works around this issue by adding an element to the light DOM, telling gapi to render the button there, then snatching the element and sending it to the shadow... more »

The <google-hangout-button> (https://github.com/GoogleWebComponents/google-hangout-button/) works around this issue by adding an element to the light DOM, telling gapi to render the button there, then snatching the element and sending it to the shadow realm dom.

Since there are a lot more widgets to choose from, I took this idea and started by creating a generic <google-plugin> element that takes `type` and `data` as attributes to render the appropriate plugin, using the same idea as the hangout-button.

So for the default +1 button you could just use
<google-plugin type="plusone"></google-plugin>

Or for a profile badge you would use
<google-plugin type='person' data='{"href": "https://plus.google.com/+GerwinSturm"}'>

From there I started to create specific elements, that have the relevant attributes for each plugin.

For now there are only two but others are easy to add:

<google-plusone-button></google-plusone-button>

<google-profile-badge profile="+GerwinSturm"></google-profile-badge>

(the profile attribute will be used to build the href attribute needed by the profile widget)

The plugins still aren't really happy inside of the shadow dom, displaying some errors in the console, and not all interaction seems to be working correctly.
I have some other ideas I will test to improve this, but maybe the gapi team will eventually support Shadow DOM properly ;)

For now these elements work better than not working at all :)

The element also has a `consent` attribute you can bind to which will be true or false depending on existence of a consent cookie.

My first thought on +Allen Firstenberg's very valid rant about the new Google Drive UI (https://plus.google.com/101852559274654726533/posts/EYvuvB5GLDd) was something along these lines:

"The Google Drive API is one of the very few APIs that is powerful enough to allow building your own complete custom UI."

Now this thought wouldn't leave me alone until I had actually built a proof-of-concept of my statement, so here you go, a simple (and very incomplete) drive viewer built in Polymer:

Now playing: Ether One

I have to say that this game was a positive surprise for me in each regard. It features an interesting but obscure main storyline you can follow through the game without much effort. I actually at first reached the end of the game without finding my way into one big section of the world, so I had to go back to complete this one.

But then there are many, many more small stories to uncover by solving riddles ranging from easy to hard, but none of them impossible since there are hints for the riddles spread around everywhere, you just have to be thorough in looking around and also listen to the narration closely which also includes hints on what you are supposed to do. And while the game helps you in keeping track of the more important hints, sometimes taking notes yourself isn't a bad idea either. And solving the riddles is quite rewarding as well.... more »

On the whole I spent around 12 hours in the game to uncover the last secrets, or at least I think I found all the secrets, which is a lot compared to other Indie games in this price range.___

This twitter fetcher (with some modifications by me) enabled +Comment Tracker to continue supporting Twitter after the old Twitter API was turned off.

Code is now more easily available if you need to modify it yourself, even though you could always ask Jason for it if needed :)

For my upcoming Comment Tracker redesign, I've packaged the logic in a Polymer element that returns the tweets as JSON:
https://github.com/Scarygami/comment-tracker/blob/master/elements/twitter-fetcher.html

Back in 2013 I wrote a little #JavaScript component which allows you to fetch your #Tweets without the need to use the new OAUTH based v1.1 API so people who had static sites could still integrate their tweets without having to write a backend (and to this day I believe it is the only way to do this in pure JavaScript). Just an update to say the code is now  also on #GitHub in all its unminified glory due to popular request if you want to fork it. https://github.com/jasonmayes/Twitter-Post-Fetcher

Resharing, since I've pushed several fixes and improvements to the repo.

Explorations in Polymer and Material design

As I already announced I've been planning to do a rewrite of +Comment Tracker for quite a while already since while functional it never had a good design and wasn't responsive at all, which meant I had to maintain two version, one for stand-alone and one for the Hangout extension to accomodate the 300px wide space.

So when the Web-Starter-Kit (https://developers.google.com/web/starter-kit/) was released shortly before I/O I took this opportunity to use it as a starting point for my re-design and actually had a first prototype done during the flight from Europe to SF.

Then after Material design and the Polymer paper elements (http://www.polymer-project.org/docs/elements/paper-elements.html) were launched at #io14 , and since I had been playing around a lot with Polymer before that already, I changed most of the web-starter-kit elements to use their respective Paper or core-element substitute, and got rid of most of the css, html and js in the process.

From the basic layout, which was pretty much done after the flight back to Europe, I then started building my own custom elements to encapsulate different features of Comment Tracker.

The nice thing about Polymer and custom elements in general in my opinion is that you not only package html and css but also JS into your element. So each <comment-tracker-source> element takes care of fetching the related comments itself, and then notifies the main <comment-tracker> element via an event about new comments that arrived. Those comments are then stored in an array which is used to build the list of <comment-tracker-entry> which in turn encapsulate their own logic, like constructing an overlay that can be displayed on the hangout video to show comments to the audience, which is then handled with a <text-screen> element that makes sure the text is properly sized and positioned.

The <comment-tracker-source> and <comment-tracker-entry> element themselves make use of a common <comment-tracker-card> element that handles the basic layout of the card, including actions you can perform on each card.

Fetching data from the APIs is handled via <core-ajax> elements which basically just receive the URL you want to capture, and then return the data in an attribute which you can bind to, or you can alternatively wait for an event to fire from the element.

Now as you might know from some of my previous work (e.g. https://discovery-check.appspot.com/docs/ or https://github.com/dart-lang/discovery_api_dart_client_generator) I have a thing for discovery based APIs. I've been thinking (but not put into action yet) that it would be possible to take a discovery document and automatically create suitable Polymer elements for the methods. So instead of using

<core-ajax href="https://www.googleapis.com/plus/v1/people/{{user}}/activities/public?key={{API_KEY}}" response="{{data}}"></core-ajax>

you could use

<plus-activities-list
  user="{{user}}"
  collection="public"
  key="{{API_KEY}}"
  response="{{data}}"></plus-activities-list>

But... that might be a future project and I'm not entirely sure if it would be any useful, but that would be something like a Google APIs Client Library for Polymer.
While most likely not necessary (but what is really) since you can get the same with core-ajax, it just somehow would feel nice to be able to construct a personal activity stream on your website like this:

<plus-activities-list
  user="+GerwinSturm"
  collection="public"
  key="{{API_KEY}}"
  response="{{data}}" auto></plus-activities-list>

<template repeat="{{post in data.items}}">
  <plus-post data="{{post}}"></plus-post>
</template>

Where <plus-post> is your brilliant responsive custom element that takes the JSON data from the API and renders the post from it. (<comment-tracker-source> does something like this already.)

Of course you would then turn this into another custom element so you would end up with

<plus-stream user="+GerwinSturm" key="{{API_KEY}}"></plus-stream>

Which then is an awesome element to share out into the world because a lot of people have been asking for something like this for years. So yeah, I'll be expecting someone of you to create this element ;)

But enough digression. I've shared the new version of Comment tracker with my beta group (Join here: https://plus.google.com/112986009215783461617/posts/QtTmkgLxhXN) a few days ago and already got some great feedback. The biggest issue with Polymer at the moment is browser compatibility.
While I did all of my testing in different versions of Chrome (stable, beta, dev) all of which worked great, someone from the beta group uses Firefox where some things strangely failed.
The problem boiled down to the fact that even in the newest version of Firefox waiting for the 'ready' or 'attached' event sometimes wasn't enough to get proper data-binding, so for now I had to change some of the elements to wait for the 'domReady' event instead or use property observers.

Another fun thing with developing at the bleeding edge is that things change, a lot. After one particularly nasty `bower update` suddenly the colours on all the <paper-icon-button> elements disappeared, the reason being that they switched from using `fill` as the styling property to `color` which admittedly makes more sense, even though `fill` would be correct since they are svg icons. They now take the color which you set on the <paper-icon> element and apply it as fill to the underlying svg icon. (Docs still need to be updated to reflect this change: http://www.polymer-project.org/docs/elements/paper-elements.html#paper-icon-button)

Now, while the beta group is still testing and I have some more features I have to add before launching this more widely (old version will probably stick around for people stuck with legacy browser), I decided to already make the source public here: https://github.com/Scarygami/comment-tracker/

Have fun, I definitely have :)

Weird issue with input elements in Polymer in Chrome.

As soon as an input element is included in a Polymer element it doesn't get the default right-click context menu anymore, that would allow pasting content (CTRL-V works though). Context menu also appears correctly in FireFox v. 30.

Someone posted about this new TV series in my stream last week. I googled for it once to read more about it and watched the first episode.
Was interesting enough to check out more and see how it develops.
Actually thought about it yesterday and wondered when the next episode would come out (but never googled for it).
Got this notification just now...

So if you are interested in trying out the new version of Comment Tracker let me know in the comments, and I will add you to the circle I will share the links to the standalone and hangout-extension with, once it's stable and feature-complete enough for testing.

Some interesting custom elements that I needed to create in the process of implementing this so far (all of which will be open-sourced soonish)

A <twitter-fetcher> element based on the work by +Jason Mayes (http://www.jasonmayes.com/projects/twitterApi/) to retrieve and parse tweets as JSON from a Twitter widget.

A <text-screen> element based on the work by +Allen Firstenberg that takes text as input and displays a Hangout overlay.

A <simple-html> element that takes html as input, removes most of the tags, but still allows links to be displayed. This was necessary because Polymer automatically escapes all html input, so the only way to get links to be displayed is to split the html in text and link parts, extract the href from the links and have a template like this:

<template repeat="{{part in parts}}">
  <template if="{{part.link}}">
    <a href="{{part.link}}">{{part.text}}</a>
  </template>
  <template if="{{!part.link}}">
    {{part.text}}
  </template>
</template>

Having the design fully responsive also means, that it automatically works as Hangout extension which are limited to a width of 300px.

So now I have one <comment-tracker> element that includes all the functionality, and is included directly on the website.

For the Hangout extension I have a <hangout-comment-tracker> element, extending my <hangout-app> element (https://github.com/Scarygami/hangout-app) to do the necessary Hangouts API setup. And inside the <hangout-comment-tracker> the same <comment-tracker> element as on the website is used. In the <comment-tracker> element I then check for existence of the Hangouts API to enable Hangout-only functionality, like the overlay.

Generally the story nicely captured our week surrounding #io14 in SF though :)
